ADDIS ABABA, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Ethio Engineering Group (EEG) in partnership with a Chinese firm has launched the manufacturing of electric scooters at its Bishoftu Automotive Manufacturing Industry, about 40 km east of Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported Tuesday.

The initiative aims to introduce affordable and efficient electric scooters in Ethiopia, supporting the country's transition to sustainable urban transport, the report said.

The newly manufactured 15-kg scooters, powered by rechargeable batteries, are lightweight, compact, and designed for city commuting. They can travel up to 30 km on a single charge, contributing to a cleaner environment, it noted.

Designed to ease traffic congestion in cities like Addis Ababa, the scooters have a speed range of 20 to 30 km per hour and are expected to enter the market soon.

"The scooters will have a great role in supporting Ethiopia's corridor development projects and providing alternative urban transport options," EEG Chief Executive Officer Suleiman Dedefo was quoted as saying.

As part of its ambitious transition to electric mobility, the Ethiopian government announced in March last year its plan to introduce nearly half a million electric vehicles (EVs) within a decade. Officials believe this shift will not only reduce fuel import costs but also promote environmentally friendly transportation.

Currently, various Ethiopian companies are cooperating with Chinese EV manufacturers, primarily by importing and assembling electric vehicles locally.
