HELSINKI, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- A 5.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded late Saturday in the area of central Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano, Iceland's national broadcaster RUV reported on Sunday.

The earthquake occurred just after 9 p.m. local time, and it was the largest earthquake since the major eruption of Bardarbunga volcano starting in August 2014.

Hildur Maria Fridriksdottir, an expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said there was no eruption activity in the area at the time.

This has been the fourth earthquake over five level since the 2014 eruption. The volcano is still collecting magma and recovering from the 2014 eruption, according to the meteorological authority.

Bardarbunga is located in the central plateau of Iceland, some 200 kilometers northeast from the capital Reykjavik. The volcano is covered by the Vatnajokull ice cap.
