Polio vaccination for children in Gaza surpasses expectation: WHO

GENEVA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- United Nations agencies have vaccinated over 187,000 children against polio in central Gaza over the past three days, exceeding expectations, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.

The vaccination effort, targeting children up to 10 years old, continues in central Gaza. "Four fixed sites will continue to offer polio vaccination for the next three days in central Gaza to ensure no child is missed," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press briefing in Geneva.

Tedros emphasized the importance of the humanitarian pause that allowed the campaign to proceed safely and called for it to be maintained. He also appealed for a broader ceasefire to address other significant health needs in the region.
