Olympics | Elgendy wins Egypt's 1st gold at Paris 2024 in modern pentathlon


PARIS, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Ahmed Elgendy won Egypt's first gold medal at the Paris Olympics in modern pentathlon.

The 24-year-old, who took silver at Tokyo 2020, set a new world record with 1,555 points to beat the previous mark of 1,551 held by Csaba Bohm of Hungary.

Elgendy had already set an Olympic record of 1,516 points in the semifinals before making an upgrade in the final.

In the final, he made strong showings in riding with 300 points, fencing with 245 points, and swimming with 322 points.

Also on Saturday, Egypt's Sara Ahmed took a silver medal in weightlifting, bringing Egypt's total medals at the games to three, after Mohamed Elsayed had scooped a bronze medal in fencing.
