COLOMBO, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will start issuing passports with updated colors and designs for diplomatic, official and regular passports from October, a minister said on Thursday.

Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles said at a meeting with ministry officials that most other countries in the region have updated their passports as per the latest guidelines by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The minister said the existing passport was designed in 2002 and needed an update.

Sri Lanka plans to provide e-passports to its citizens effective from January 2025, said the country's Department of Immigration and Emigration.
