ATHENS, July 29 (Xinhua) -- In the past 24 hours, Greece has recorded 54 wildfires, with firefighting teams successfully containing 43 of them, according to Greek Fire Brigade on Monday.

However, efforts continue to control 11 active blazes, as reported by the Greek national news agency (AMNA).

A major fire that erupted Monday afternoon in a forested area near the village of Petries, in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri, Evia, has become the primary focus.

The blaze intensified quickly due to strong northerly winds. To combat the flames, 189 firefighters, nine ground teams, and 56 vehicles, along with numerous volunteers, have been deployed. Additionally, 26 aerial units, including 16 aircraft and 10 helicopters, are assisting in the efforts.

Greek Fire Brigade spokesperson Vasilis Vathrakogiannis said that local municipality water tankers and construction machinery are also supporting the operation. A firefighting vessel has been dispatched, and the Coast Guard has mobilized boats near the coastline. Hellenic Police forces are aiding in the evacuation of residents.

A firefighter battling the blaze in Evia sustained minor burns and was transported to the Aliveri Health Center for treatment, according to AMNA.
