JOHANNESBURG, July 5 (Xinhua) -- A series of cold fronts were expected to approach South Africa in the coming days, bringing snow and sub-zero temperatures in several provinces, warned the South African Weather Service (SAWS) Friday.

"Several cold fronts are expected to reach South Africa's shores during the coming week. The first weather system of the series is an intense cold front that is expected to affect the western and central parts of the country from Sunday, and the eastern parts from Monday," said the SAWS in a statement.

The SAWS warned that the system was expected to bring about widespread and disruptive snowfall over the southern and western high ground, accompanied by damaging winds and very cold conditions over a significant part of the country.

It was predicted that the Free State Province would experience the coldest temperatures, with levels potentially plunging to between minus two and minus six degrees Celsius, according to SAWS forecaster Celeste Fourie.

Heavy rainfall is also expected over the western parts of the Western Cape Province, where flooding is likely, the SAWS said, urging the public and small stock farmers to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their animals.
