LISBON, May 15 (Xinhua) -- The poverty risk in Portugal rose to 17 percent last year, affecting over 1.77 million people, according to the "Portugal, Social Balance 2023" report released on Wednesday.

According to the analysis, "the poverty rate increased mainly among women, with an increase of 0.9 percentage points in 2023."

The report's data shows that "the prevalence of poverty is higher in the autonomous regions," and the poverty risk rate among people working on temporary contracts "is nearly triple" that recorded among those working on permanent contracts.

The report, which includes preliminary data from the Survey on Income and Living Conditions and the National Institute of Statistics, was conducted by researchers from the Nova School of Business and Economics.
