JERUSALEM, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Israel has signed a wheat production agreement with Romania to reinforce its national food security, Israel's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said in a statement on Sunday.

Under the agreement, Israel will share knowledge and technology with Romania in irrigation, soil conservation, plant protection, and more for joint wheat cultivation in the partner country.

In exchange, Israel can import wheat from the partner country to strengthen its food reserves for the long term and reduce shortage risks.

"In the current period of global uncertainty and severe geopolitical conflicts in our region, the agreement with Romania will provide Israel with an additional import channel, especially during an emergency," said Israeli Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter.

The minister noted that Israel had to find alternative wheat import sources in a short time, and this kind of agreement can brace national food security against the impact of climatic crises, wars, and pandemics.
