Namibia's annual inflation drops to 4.8 pct in April

WINDHOEK, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's annual inflation rate for April dropped to 4.8 percent from 6.1 percent in April 2023, according to Namibia Consumer Price Index statistics released on Wednesday.

Food, non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, each contributing 1.0 percentage points, continued to be the main contributors to inflation as well as housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels and transport accounting for 0.9 percentage points, Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) Statistician Alex Shimuafeni said in a statement.

Monthly inflation rose to 0.7 percent from 0.0 percent the previous month.

According to Shimuafeni, the annual inflation rate for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel components that accounted for 28.4 percent of the consumer basket increased by 3.6 percent during April compared to 2.6 percent observed in April 2023.

From April 2023 to April 2024, the lowest monthly inflation rate was witnessed in July 2023.
