CHICAGO, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Ford Motor Co. reported Wednesday that it sold 508,083 vehicles in the first quarter of 2024, up 6.8 percent year on year.
The U.S. automaker attributed the sales increase to the growth in hybrids, which helped Ford begin the year of 2024 as America's best-selling truck manufacturer, including pickups and van.
Ford's overall hybrid sales in the first quarter were up 42 percent on sales of 38,421 vehicles, and the growth is expected to continue as more versions of the new F-150 hybrid ship to dealers.
Meanwhile, the Dearborn-based automaker sold 20,223 EVs in the first quarter, up 86 percent year on year and making Ford America's second best-selling EV brand behind Tesla for the quarter.
To be specific, America's best-selling electric truck, the F-150 Lightning, had sales of 7,743 units, up 80 percent; and Mustang Mach-E posted strong sales of 9,589 SUVs, up 77 percent over a year ago.
The majority of Ford's sales remained to be internal combustion engine vehicles, which went up 2.6 percent in the first quarter.
General Motors Co. Tuesday reported first-quarter sales slipped 1.5 percent. Stellantis NV Wednesday reported that its U.S. sales fell 10 percent in the first quarter.
