BAGHDAD, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced Wednesday to hold the general population census on Nov. 20, 2024, about 27 years since the last census in the country.

The announcement was made at a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning Mohammed Ali Tamim and governors of Iraqi provinces in the capital Baghdad, during which they discussed the preparations for the general population census, according to a statement by the ministry.

Estimates by the ministry last July showed that the Iraqi population had reached 43.32 million as of mid-2023, with an annual population growth rate of 2.5 percent.

Iraq used to conduct a population census every 10 years, with the last done in 1997. It has not conducted any population census since the U.S. invasion in 2003.
