ADDIS ABABA, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 1 million children in Ethiopia are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition in 2024, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Friday.

In a press release, the UN agency said it projects around 350,000 pregnant and lactating women will also be malnourished in 2024.

Ethiopia is grappling with multiple crises, including climate change-driven drought, which is outpacing responses to the crises, the UNICEF added.

Last month, the UN Children's Fund said that around 20 million people, including 10.8 million children in Ethiopia, need emergency humanitarian aid in 2024.

It added that the agency needs 535 million U.S. dollars to address the multiple and growing challenges facing vulnerable populations and to help avert the disastrous consequences of overlapping crises in Ethiopia in 2024. The funds are needed to meet basic food needs, provide reproductive health services, give vaccinations for children, and provide clean water for families in need.
