5 die in collision between mini-bus, fuel tanker in eastern Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, June 5 (Xinhua) -- At least five people died on the spot and 20 others were injured on Monday morning when a mini-bus collided with a fuel tanker in Kilosa district in Tanzania's eastern Morogoro region.

The accident occurred at 8 a.m. local time at a sharp corner after the driver of the mini-bus tried to overtake a number of cars and ended up colliding with the fuel tanker coming from the opposite side, Morogoro regional police commander Alex Mukama said.

He said the collision happened at Iyovi village along the Morogoro-Iringa highway, and that the injured passengers have been rushed to the local Saint Kizito hospital.

Stephen Mbilinyi, a medical doctor at Saint Kizito, said nine of the injured passengers were admitted to the hospital, one was referred to Morogoro regional hospital for specialized treatment and 10 were treated and discharged.
