9 killed in inter-communal violence in western Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Inter-communal violence in Ethiopia's western region of Gambela has left at least nine people dead, a local official confirmed Thursday.

The recent inter-communal violence in the regional capital of Gambela City and the region's Itang district also left 17 others injured, reported the Gambela Regional Government Press Secretariat Office, quoting President of Gambela Region Umod Ujulu as saying.

Ujulu said federal and regional security forces have now been able to restore law and order to the affected areas. He did not disclose the exact date of the clashes and the identities of the communities which had clashed.

Gambela Region, Ethiopia's westernmost region, has suffered frequently from inter-communal violence among various ethnic groups living in the region. The clashes are mainly over access to power and land resources.

Gambela Region has also hosted tens of thousands of South Sudanese refugees fleeing civil war since 2013.
