BAMAKO, April 20 (Xinhua) -- The chief of staff of Mali's transitional president was killed in an ambush in southwestern Mali, said a statement from the Presidency of Mali Thursday.

According to the statement, the delegation of social works of the president of the transition was the victim of an ambush in a locality near Nara, in which four people were killed, including Adjudant Oumar Traore, chief of staff of the transitional president.

The statement, however, did not give further details on when the attack happened or who was responsible.

According to another press release published by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations of the Armed Forces (Dirpa), the attack targeted a drilling company mobilized as part of the Malian transitional president's social works. It took place Tuesday at around 5 p.m., local time, on the Guire-Nara road, the press release said.

Since 2012, Mali has been plagued by insurgencies, jihadist incursions, and inter-community violence that have left thousands of people dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.
