KAMPALA, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A stray elephant attacked farmers in the western Uganda district of Buliisa, killing one and injuring two others.

Julius Hakiza, the police spokesperson for the Albertine Region, told Xinhua by telephone Tuesday that the incident happened Sunday evening.

"The report was made at the police where a stray elephant caused the death of a 62-year-old man and injured two other farmers," he said. "When we got this information, our team of detectives rushed to the scene. The injured victims were rushed for treatment at Buliisa Hospital."

Although the police officer said this was an isolated case in this community, which borders Murchison Falls National Park, local media reported last year that the villagers petitioned the Uganda Wildlife Authority seeking protection of their crops which were under persistent destruction by elephants and buffaloes.

In January, stray elephants killed a 53-year-old man in the southwestern district of Kanungu as he guarded his crops against wild animals from the Queen Elizabeth National Park. In 2020, stray elephants from Murchison Falls National Park killed a game ranger in the northern Ugandan district of Nwoya.
