ADDIS ABABA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat on Monday expressed Africa's solidarity with Türkiye and Syria over strong earthquakes in the two countries.

"Africa stands in unwavering solidarity and sorrow with the government and people of Türkiye and Syria following the devastating earthquake that led to the deaths of more than a thousand innocent people and wreaking terrible infrastructural damage," Faki said via Twitter.

More than 1,600 people were killed and thousands of others injured after strong earthquakes jolted parts of Türkiye and northwest of Syria early Monday, as local rescuers are battling harsh winter conditions to search for survivors under the rubble.
