ABUJA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Three bodies were recovered from the rubble of a three-story building that collapsed Thursday in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Friday.
Twenty-one people with light injuries were rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building in Gwarinpa, a developed district in Abuja, as the rescue operation entered its second day, Manzo Ezekiel, a spokesman for the NEMA, told Xinhua via telephone.
Ezekiel added that the rescue operation is still ongoing.
The building under construction collapsed while work was in progress, trapping dozens of workers Thursday afternoon.
Cases of building collapses are not uncommon in Nigeria, and local experts blame them on aging structures, non-compliance with building planning and regulations, and the use of substandard materials during construction.
