Car crash leaves 3 police officers, 2 suspects dead in north Chile


SANTIAGO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- A roadway accident in northern Chile on Friday claimed the lives of three police officers and two suspects who were in the police vehicle which collided with a truck parked on the shoulder of the road.

Chile's police said the predawn crash occurred along a slope known as Cuesta El Teniente in the Ovalle commune, some 400 kilometers north of the capital, in the Coquimbo region.

All three officers belonged to the investigative police unit (PDI) and were part of northern Chile's Calama Anti-Narcotics and Organized Crime Brigade while the two suspects, one a foreigner, were being taken for questioning in connection with drug trafficking, according to the PDI.

Chile's Carabineros, or militarized police, will open an investigation into the causes of the crash, the PDI said.
