LUSAKA, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Zambia on Thursday kick-started the long-awaited first-ever electronic national census for population and housing with President Hakainde Hichilema and his family being the first to be counted.

Enumerators from the Zambia Statistics Agency and officials from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) visited the president's residence in Lusaka, the country's capital, to officially commence the exercise which has so far suffered two postponements, reported the state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.

Mulenga Musepa, the Interim Statistician-General at the Zambia Statistics Agency, said that conducting the census electronically will enhance efficiency and reduce expenditure.

The census will run from Aug. 18 to Sept. 14, 2022.

The census was initially supposed to have been held in August 2020 but was pushed to 2021 before being pushed again to August this year. Zambia conducts a Census of Population and Housing every decade. The last census was conducted in 2020.
