LISBON, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Portugal's year-on-year inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 8.7 percent in June, the highest since December 1992, the country's National Statistics Institute (INE) said on Tuesday.
The CPI increased by 0.7 percentage points compared to 8 percent registered in May 2022.
Energy-related inflation rose to 31.7 percent, an increase of 4.4 percentage points from the previous month, and the highest value recorded since August 1984.
The CPI for unprocessed food products, however, amounted to 11.9 percent, a modest increase over the 11.6 percent recorded in May 2022.
Using the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which unifies the method of calculating inflation in the European Union, Portuguese inflation was 9 percent, slightly above the 8.6 percent euro area average.
According to Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, the rise in inflation in the euro area continues to be driven by growing prices in the energy, food, alcohol, tobacco, non-energy industrial goods, and services sectors.
