TIRANA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The number of new coronavirus cases in Albania hit a record high on Tuesday as the Health Ministry reported 879 infections in the past 24 hours.
The previous single-day record -- also 879 -- was registered on Dec. 12 last year.
The health authorities conducted 3,605 coronavirus tests in the past 24 hours, of which 879 were positive.
Currently, 284 patients are receiving treatment in the country's four hospitals dedicated to COVID-19 patients, 21 of them in intensive care.
In the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry reported eight COVID-19-related deaths and 589 recoveries, bringing the total number of fatalities and recoveries to 1,332 and 44,880, respectively.
On Tuesday, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Albania stood at 73,691.
As the world is struggling to contain the pandemic, vaccination is underway in some countries with the already-authorized coronavirus vaccines.
Meanwhile, 236 candidate vaccines are still being developed worldwide -- 63 of them in clinical trials -- in countries including Germany, China, Russia, Britain and the United States, according to information released by the World Health Organization on Jan. 26.
