SANTIAGO, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chile reported 4,471 more infections of the novel coronavirus on Friday, as well as 75 more deaths, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 661,180 and the death toll to 17,369, the Ministry of Health said.
The rate of incidence and transmission at the regional level is very high, Minister of Health Enrique Paris warned, adding that more restrictive measures have not been ruled out.
For example, if the Santiago metropolitan area is found to be worsening after review next week, the capital area could once again be placed under quarantine.
Chile's government had already announced this week it would tighten quarantines in several areas and step up restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.
However, Santiago's international airport remains open to travelers visiting during the peak tourist summer season.
