Dire wolves featured in Game of Thrones distant relative of modern wolves: study

CANBERRA, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Ancient DNA has revealed that dire wolves which became known after TV series Game of Thrones were only distant relatives of modern wolves.

In a world-first, researchers from the University of Adelaide, Durham University, Ludwig Maximilian University, and the University of California Los Angeles have sequenced the DNA of five dire wolf fossils from North America dating back up to 50,000 years.
