RIGA, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Latvian lawmakers voted on Thursday to appoint MP Daniels Pavluts as the Baltic country's new health minister as Latvia is faced with a formidable task of containing the ongoing spread of COVID-19 and rolling out a nationwide vaccination campaign.
Pavluts, the leader of the ruling liberal party "Movement Pro!", takes over from Ilze Vinkele who was forced to resign after losing Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins' confidence. The prime minister had been criticizing Vinkele for contradictory decisions in combating the COVID-19 crisis and a lack of a coherent immunization plan.
