Ecuador's COVID-19 cases near 210,000

QUITO, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador's Ministry of Health on Monday reported 403 new daily cases of novel coronavirus, raising the total caseload to 209,758.

The death toll stands at 13,994, with 9,441 confirmed COVID-19 deaths and 4,553 deaths suspected of being the virus related, but not verified through testing.

Health authorities said they had applied 737,315 tests so far throughout the country to detect the virus.

Of Ecuador's 24 provinces, north-central Pichincha continues to register the largest outbreak, with a total of 74,362 cases reported as of Monday, 80 more than that on Sunday.

According to the Health Ministry, the pandemic is currently in full swing in the South American country, and the public has been warned to avoid large gatherings during holidays.
