ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Eritrean government on Sunday stressed the need to amplify the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic as the number of confirmed positive cases in the country crossed the 1,000 mark.
The urgent call was made by the Eritrean Ministry of Health in a statement issued late Sunday, as it emphasized that the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country has risen to 1,039 after the Red Sea nation recorded 47 new cases of COVID-19.
The ministry said that "as the aggregate number of COVID-19 positive cases to-date in the country exceeded 1,000, it is very much preoccupying against the backdrop of the relatively slow rate of spread of the pandemic in the country as a whole in the past nine months."
It also noted that the situation "amplifies the urgency of implementing, with all requisite seriousness, all the preventive guidelines issued by the government so as to fully break the transmission cycle of the pandemic."
The Red Sea nation, which confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on March 21, has so far recorded only one COVID-19 related death.
The ministry, which noted that 23 patients who have been receiving medical treatment in hospitals in the Central Region and Southern Red Sea Region have recovered fully and have been released from these facilities, disclosed that some 623 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the infectious virus so far.
