3 policemen killed in Nigeria boat mishap

ABUJA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Three policemen have been confirmed killed after a boat carrying police officers capsized in Nigeria's southern region, said local authorities on Saturday.

The accident occurred on Friday, ahead of a by-election in two senatorial zones in the Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa State, in the country's South South region on Saturday.

Bayelsa police spokesman Asinim Butswat told Xinhua that the deceased police officers were deployed to polling centers and on their way to their place of assignment when the boat carrying them capsized.

The number of police officers involved in the accident is yet to be ascertained, Butswat said, adding an investigation is underway.
