TOKYO -- Two of Japan's three major mobile phone carriers said Wednesday they will introduce cheaper plans under their low-cost service brands under government pressure.

COLOMBO -- Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Wednesday informed visiting U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo that Sri Lanka's foreign policy was based on neutrality and he was not ready to compromise the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation in maintaining these foreign ties.

According to press releases of the Sri Lankan President Media Division and the Foreign Ministry, President Rajapaksa said that Sri Lanka wanted to achieve a high level of economic growth by attracting more foreign investments, and not obtain loans continuously. (Sri Lanka-US-Visit)

HONG KONG -- The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Wednesday to strengthen co-operation in energy-related matters.

This is the first MoU signed between the EMSD and the EMA for enhancing a collaborative relationship towards greater energy safety and resilience through innovation and co-operation, said a statement of the HKSAR government. (Hong Kong-Singapore-Cooperation)

TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Wednesday was grilled in parliament by a main opposition party over a number of issues spanning his vetoing of scholars' appointments to the science council, to his pledge to achieve carbon neutrality.

Suga's decision not to appoint six people as new members of the Science Council of Japan which operates under the auspices of the premiere but makes proposals independently from the state, was criticized as "illegal" by the head of an opposition party. (Japan-PM-Opposition)
