Arizona, Maryland added to NYS COVID-19 Travel Advisory List

NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. states of Arizona and Maryland were added to New York State's COVID-19 Travel Advisory List and no previous areas were removed, raising the number of states on the advisory list to 40 from the previous 38, according to a government statement issued on Tuesday.

The advisory requires individuals who have traveled to New York from areas with significant community spread to quarantine for 14 days. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from an area with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a 7-day rolling average or an area with a 10 percent or higher positivity rate over a 7-day rolling average.

"The fall, as we said you're going to see the viral rate increase. That is where we are. Scientists have said that. We have been prepared for it," Governor Andrew Cuomo was quoted as saying in the statement.

"We developed a more sophisticated strategy, more sophisticated testing. A micro-strategy has been developed in response to the anticipation of the increase in the fall. Many other states, federal government disregarded the scientific community. We never have, and now they're caught by surprise by the viral increase, and that's why we have 43 states (including Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania) on our quarantine list," he added.

"Neighboring states Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania now meet the criteria for the travel advisory -- however, given the interconnected nature of the region and mode of transport between us, a quarantine on these states is not practically viable," said the statement.

The statewide COVID-19 test positivity rate was 1.32 percent on Monday, the rate in the "Red Zone" Focus Areas was 2.91 Percent and the statewide rate without the "Red Zone" Focus Areas included was 1.25 percent, according to the statement.

The Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University reported 33,366 coronavirus deaths in New York State as of Tuesday afternoon, the worst among all the states of the country.
