Sri Lanka's index of industrial production down 9 pct in August

COLOMBO, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's index of industrial production (IIP) declined 9 percent year on year in August, the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) said here Wednesday.

The IIP for August 2020 stood at 102.1, compared to the figure of 112.1 recorded for the same month in 2019, a statement by the DCS said.

Eight out of 20 industrial sectors recorded positive growth. In particular, printing, chemicals and pharmaceuticals recorded growth of 21.8 percent, 16.3 percent and 10.8 percent respectively.

However, 11 sectors including food, leather, wood, and apparel recorded negative growth of 3.5 percent, 52.7 percent, 48.5 percent and 33 percent respectively.

The IIP is a measure of short term trends in the volume of industrial production and is recorded by Sri Lanka's DCS.
