WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- The overall U.S. trade deficit in August widened to the highest level in 14 years as imports rose faster than exports, the U.S. Commerce Department reported Tuesday.

U.S. exports rose by 2.2 percent to 171.9 billion U.S. dollars in August while imports increased by 3.2 percent to 239 billion dollars, the department said, adding the figures reflected "both the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the continued recovery from the sharp declines earlier this year."
