Aboriginal artist Namatjira wins Australia's most prestigious prize

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Indigenous artist Vincent Namatjira won Australia's most prestigious art prize on Friday, the first time an Aboriginal painter won the portraiture competition since its inception 99 years ago.

Namatjira, 37, was awarded this year's A$100,000 ($70,620) Archibald Prize for his painting of Indigenous footballer Adam Goodes in a work he titled "Stand strong for who you are", the Art Gallery of New South Wales said.
