SANTIAGO, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chile on Monday said its COVID-19 death toll reached 12,013 after 64 more patients died of the novel coronavirus in the previous 24 hours.
According to the Ministry of Health, 1,685 new cases of COVID-19 infection in the past 24 hours also pushed the total caseload to 436,433.
The deputy minister of public health, Paula Daza, said officials moved to improve tracing by stepping up their monitoring of confirmed active cases, including those who are asymptomatic, to "isolate them."
With the Sept. 17 to 19 national holiday celebrations approaching, she urged citizens to maintain social distancing and safety measures.
"We hope to not have situations that could generate outbreaks," such as large social gatherings, she said.
The capital Santiago and the metropolitan region will have 100 new inspectors on the lookout for banned parties, she added.
