ROME, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Food waste in Italy is down this year, according to data from several food and agricultural groups, with one of them -- the agricultural sector group Coldiretti -- calling on the government to take steps to permanently reduce the ecological footprint of the country's food sector.

The information was released ahead of Saturday's "Earth Overshoot Day," which is the approximate calendar date on which humanity exhausted nature's budget for the year. This year, the "Earth Overshoot Day" falls on Aug. 22, as calculated by Global Footprint Network (GFN), an international sustainability think tank, nearly a month after the same point in 2019, which fell on July 29. The later "Earth Overshoot Day" takes place the better it is in terms of the use of global resources.
