CAIRO, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases exceeded 309,000 in Iran on Sunday. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's tally nudges 279,000.

Iran, the hardest-hit country in the Middle East region, reported 2,685 new cases, bringing the total number of infections to 309,437.
