SIBU: A neighbour saved the life of a seven-year-old boy who had been trapped after his family home in Taman Sanhill caught fire on Monday (March 9) morning.

The neighbour, Vanessa Julia, 40, who was at her home, was alerted by the loud cry of Gabriel Thomas Nyalau calling for help.

Without a second thought, she rushed to his aid.

Despite smoke billowing from inside the house, she ran in and pulled the child to safety.

Gabriel, a Year One pupil who attends the afternoon session, however suffered minor burns.

At the time of the fire, his parents had already gone to work, leaving him alone. They usually pick him up and send him to school by noon.

Sibu Bomba chief Janggan Muling said they received a distress call at 10.06am and despatched seven firefighters to the scene.

“Upon arriving at the house, our men sprang into action and managed to douse the flames on the double-storey house, ” he said.

The fire ultimately destroyed about 60% of the house, he estimates.

Janggan said the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit also confirmed that at the time of the fire, the boy was alone in the house.

He advised parents not to leave their children at home alone without anyone supervising them.
