NEW JERSEY: A commuter train crashed into a station in New Jersey during the morning rush hour on Thursday, officials said, with dozens of people reportedly injured, AFP reported.

“Due to a NJ Transit train derailment at #Hoboken Station, NJ, all PATH train service in and out of Hoboken Station is suspended,” New York’s official emergency information system tweeted.

More than 100 people were injured, AFP reported.

ABC News said those injured included the train’s engineer and a number of passengers.

Images on social media showed serious damage to the train station, a major transit hub, with part of the roof apparently caved in.

A part of the train car could be seen within the station in one of the photos.

The NBC New York website said it was told by a police chief there had been "mass casualties".

NBC New York cited local law enforcement officials as saying early indications showed the crash was an accident, although they cautioned that investigations were still underway.

It was not known what had caused the accident. - AFP
