LUEBECK, Germany, (Reuters) - Reuters photographer Zohra Bensemra followed a young Syrian refugee family seeking a new life in Europe, a journey which took them from the Mediterranean island of Lesbos to the Baltic town of Luebeck. On their 2,000 km trek they experienced the indignity of police checks, the race to get past Europe's closing borders, and the unconditional kindness of a stranger.

Her epic journey across a continent was coming to an end in northern Germany, thousands of miles from the war which has bled her country for longer than the young girl can remember.
