Chancellor Angela Merkel led her conservatives to their best result in over two decades in a German election on September 22 but must still find a coalition partner to secure a third term.

Leaders of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) unanimously backed entering formal coalition negotiations with Merkel on Thursday, SPD Chairman Sigmar Gabriel said, after a third round of exploratory talks between the two camps.
