CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama's administration asked a court on Monday to block parts of South Carolina's new immigration law, arguing the federal government had pre-eminent authority over immigration matters.
The U.S. Department of Justice sought a court injunction in South Carolina against enforcement of portions of the state law, which toughens measures against undocumented immigrants and is set to take effect on Jan. 1.
