WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congress was expected to approve an end to the ban against gays serving openly in the U.S. military on Saturday after the White House-backed repeal cleared a major hurdle set by Senate Republicans.
A final vote on the measure was set for later in the day after the Senate voted 63-33, well more than the 60 needed in the 100-member chamber, to limit debate on the bill to lift the 17-year-old "don't ask, don't tell," policy. Six Republicans joined the Senate Democratic majority to support repeal.
