GAZA (Reuters) - Hamas's government in the Gaza Strip said on Friday it had started giving cheques, rather than cash handouts, to families whose homes were destroyed during Israel's 22-day offensive in the territory.
Ahmed al-Kurd, Hamas's welfare minister, said the government gave cheques worth 4,000 euros ($5,000) to 2,700 families whose houses were completely demolished. More than 5,000 homes were destroyed during the offensive, according to Hamas estimates.
