BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Hamas' seizure of control of Gaza has left international mediators' Middle East policy in tatters, but the European Union cannot afford to abandon peace efforts for fear of still more violent and radical forces.
The Quartet of Middle East peace brokers -- the United States, the EU, Russia and the United Nations -- threw its weight behind Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday, backing his effort to form an emergency government.
