BOSTON (Reuters) - Well over 1,000 very small babies in California died from 1991 to 2000 probably because they were born in hospitals lacking expertise with the tiniest premature infants, U.S. researchers reported on Wednesday.
They said a trend toward smaller neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) may be contributing to the deaths of the smallest newborns.
