TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan called on the International Whaling Commission on Thursday to break the deadlock between pro- and anti-whaling nations or it would have to rethink its options, including possibly quitting the group.
Hours before, Japan's flagship whaling vessel, the Nisshin Maru, caught fire off the coast of Antarctica, leaving one crew member missing. New Zealand officials said the fire had been contained and the crew was waiting for it to burn itself out.
