As of 0200 GMT, the centre of typhoon Kaemi was just off the western coast of Taiwan's main island, and the storm had sustained winds as high as 119 kph, including maximum gusts of 155 kph.
Six people, including a 7-year-old girl, were injured, mostly on roads in eastern Taiwan, while about 475 people had been evacuated, government officials said.
