ATLANTA (Reuters) - Federal health officials on Thursday said drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis infection were rising, posing major challenges to efforts to eliminate the deadly disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that cases of tuberculosis that were resistant to the two drugs considered the first-line of treatment rose 13 percent to 128 in the United States between 2003 and 2004, the highest yearly increase since 1993.
