Shigeru Omi, WHO's regional director for the Western Pacific, urged people to avoid close contact with birds to avoid being infected with the H5N1 strain of avian flu which has killed more than 70 people since late 2003.
"Based upon past experience, approaching the Lunar calendar New Year, the number of cases will increase. That is our observation," Omi told Reuters.
